9/26/2013 Daily Update: A Repeat for Thursday, Powerful 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Peru

Good morning everyone!

Weather has been on repeat in New England - sunny and dry for the foreseeable future. No precipitation in store until at least Tuesday. The coastal storm I talked about will likely stay out to sea.

TODAY: Sunny, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Winds from the N at 5 mph.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy, with lows in the mid 40s. Light winds.

TOMORROW (FRIDAY!): Partly sunny, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Winds from the NW at 5 mph.

ATLANTIC TROPICS

  • Nothing exciting in the tropics

NATIONAL WEATHER

  • Beautiful weather with high pressure in the Northeast
  • Warm, with few storms in the Southeast
  • Very warm and sunny in the South and Midwest
  • Chilly with showers and elevation snows (!) for the mountains in the Northwest and Mountain West

WORLD WEATHER

  • Pabuk down to a tropical storm staying away from Japan
  • Powerful low pressure system about to cross Europe, with the first line of storms entering Western Europe
  • Storms that impacted Tasmania yesterday will cross the South Island of New Zealand

EARTHQUAKES

  • A powerful 7.0 earthquake struck Peru yesterday, on the heels of the massive 7.7 earthquake in Pakistan that created a new island. A few people are confirmed dead. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000jzma#summary
  • Definitely seeing a slight uptick in tremors in the last few days with the two 7-pointers in Peru and Pakistan

SPACE WEATHER

  • Flaring is at very low levels once again  with M-class flare chances back down to 1%. Largest sunspot is 1850 and has been showing signs of growth. That sunspot will be the focus if any flaring were to occur.
Solar activity continues to be at low levels.
