January 16th Snowstorm Recap: Snowfall Totals

The area saw an accumulating snow event beginning early, early morning starting around 3-5AM lasting into the mid morning hours before snow tapered off and we were left with lingering freezing rain and snow showers. Many schools closed due to the perfect timing so students had the day off. It was not a huge storm by any means but enough to make snow lovers satisfied. Snow accumulations turned out to be what I called for, around 2-5 inches. I definitely nailed this one! :) The highest reported snowfall was in Leverett in Franklin County where they picked up 4.8" of snow. Overall, snow totals were pretty much uniform - there weren't many variations between towns here or across the entire Southern New England. Here are snowfall totals reported by the National Weather Service throughout Western Massachusetts:

January 15-16th Snowstorm: What to Expect

After a mild and quiet stretch of weather, we are finally tracking a wintry storm system that is set to impact the morning commute on Wednesday. Computer models have had a hard time with this storm system, only latching onto the event 2-3 days beforehand.

So here's the breakdown: late tonight, clouds will increase ahead of low pressure riding along a frontal boundary that will bring snow across the region starting after midnight. We should start as snow and remain snow for the majority of the storm. Changeover to a wintry mix is possible near the end but after the heaviest precipitation has fallen so sleet/freezing rain shouldn't be much of an issue here. Since the timing of the snow coincides with the morning rush hour traffic, I do expect school delays and cancellations. As low pressure slides away from Southern New England, snow ends by the middle of the afternoon. In terms of snow accumulations, I am projecting 2-5" of snow across the area with isolated 6"+ possible.

Stay tuned to my Twitter (@SenhW) for the very latest on the impending snowstorm!
